Cyber Insurance Assessment
How much risk does your cyber insurance policy transfer?
The X-Analytics Cyber Insurance Assessment shows how much cyber risk your insurance policy transfers and how it works alongside your risk mitigation. Run the assessment, and X-Analytics combines your policy details with the rest of your profile. It builds an interactive report showing your risk with and without insurance, where coverage begins by loss category and severity, and how much of each loss your policy recovers.
Key takeaways
- The Cyber Insurance Assessment answers a common question: how much risk is my cyber insurance policy reducing?
- The report compares your cyber risk with and without insurance and puts the insurance benefit next to your risk mitigation.
- Insurance benefit is broken out by loss severity and by loss category, showing where retentions and waiting periods limit coverage.
- Interactive tables show where insurance begins, where it maxes out, and how much of each event is recovered.
- The report helps you go into your next renewal knowing how your limits, retentions, and exclusions perform.
How do you add your cyber insurance to X-Analytics?
Your policy details live in the cyber insurance section of your profile settings, which captures your premium, policy limit, and retention. It also captures the sublimits, retentions, inclusions, and exclusions for each loss category, such as data breach.
You can fill this section in two ways with the Cyber Insurance Upload:
- Upload your policy: add your cyber insurance policy, and X-Analytics builds your cyber insurance profile.
- Use the template: select your initials in the upper right, open Customer Portal, scroll to AI Upload Templates, and click Learn More. Download the cyber insurance upload template (an Excel file), fill it in offline, then return to the Cyber Insurance Upload and click Upload Cyber Insurance Details.
How do you run the Cyber Insurance Assessment?
Once your policy details are in your profile, go to Assessment, select Cyber Insurance, and click Run Assessment. X-Analytics reviews your insurance details alongside everything else in your profile and builds an interactive report. When it’s done, you can turn the report into a shareable artifact, save it to the Vault, and share it.
What does the report show at the top?
Key metrics open the report. In the walkthrough:
| Metric | Walkthrough result |
|---|---|
| Cyber risk without insurance | $20.6 million |
| Annual risk reduced by insurance | $1.52 million |
| Cyber risk with insurance | $19.0 million |
| Insurance benefit | 7.4% |
| Risk mitigation benefit, for comparison | About 69% |
An executive summary follows and explains the results. In the walkthrough, it identified a high policy retention as the main factor keeping the insurance benefit low.
What are the seven sections of the report?
Section 1: Summary
The summary breaks out insurance benefit two ways. By loss severity, it shows how benefit grows from low (10th percentile) to worst case (97th percentile), a pattern you’d expect from most cyber insurance policies. By loss category, it shows where coverage is strongest. In the walkthrough, fund transfer fraud was well insured, data breach had about a 10.2% benefit, and business interruption and ransomware had less because of waiting periods and retentions.
This section also defines key insurance terms, such as premium, limit, and retention, with your current values. It lists your policy details by category, too. In the walkthrough, data breach had a $35 million sublimit, a $3 million retention, and no waiting period, and business interruption had a twelve-hour waiting period.
Section 2: Data breach
This section shows the risk transfer zone for data breach: where insurance begins and how much each event recovers.
- Where coverage begins: in the walkthrough, insurance began at about a 90,000-record event. At that point, the total impact was $6.69 million, and insurance covered $120,000.
- Where coverage maxes out: at median severity, the policy never reached its limit, covering $27 million of a $64.2 million impact at the largest event. At high severity, the policy maxed out before a full-record breach, and at worst case it maxed out early.
- Share recovered by event size: a seven-million-record breach recovered 24.6% through insurance, and a ninety-million-record breach recovered 41.2%.
- Loss to recovery: for a one-million-record event, the total impact was $11.4 million. Of that, $6.06 million was uninsured, $3 million fell within the retention, and $2.34 million was recovered after the retention.
You can toggle the record volume and the severity to see how coverage changes for any event.
Sections 3 through 7: Interruption, misappropriation, and ransomware
The remaining sections apply the same analysis to interruption (denial of service), interruption (other), misappropriation of funds, misappropriation of intellectual property, and ransomware. For interruption, you can slide to an event length, such as 240 hours, and see the uninsured amount, the retention, and the amount recovered through insurance.
How does the report help with your next renewal?
The report shows how your limits, retentions, waiting periods, and exclusions perform against your actual exposure. It helps you weigh questions such as whether to raise a limit, adjust a retention, or revisit an exclusion at your next renewal. X-Analytics provides the analysis, and the decisions stay with you and your broker.
