Group 1001: "communicating with the business like a business"

How did Chris find X-Analytics?
Chris was introduced to X-Analytics by a friend and peer who had already seen value from it.
"I've got a really good friend, somewhat of a pseudo-mentor/peer partner. We take care of each other, and he was a big fan and had got a lot of early value with X-Analytics. So when he asked me to take a look at it, I did, and the outcome that's come from that has been fundamentally career-changing for me."
Where did Chris start?
Chris describes being new to Group 1001 and building out his security program, with a leadership team looking for assurance.
"I was new to the organization. I was trying to build trust with the leadership team who saw a lot of chaos and a lot of movement as I was building my program out. The business itself was doing very well and wanted assurance that that was gonna continue."
What did Chris want to change?
Chris says he saw X-Analytics as a way to move the security conversation away from the negative and toward what he needs, why, and the dollar value of the risk.
"I saw X-Analytics as a way to change the conversation beyond the bits and bytes of securities, the sins of the past or the investments that had not been made, and the negative that often comes with security to a very positive, 'Here's what I need, why,' and able to monetize the risk of where we were versus where we were going."
How did Chris bring his leadership team along?
Chris says he invited his leadership team to probe how it works for themselves, instead of asking them to take the results on faith.
"It wasn't Chris showing them. It was I allowed them to probe how this model works and the efficacy of it. I provided transparency in my security program and how I measure it. It's not, 'Trust me. Here, I'll prove it to you.' It's, 'You join me in the journey if we're gonna get to a place where we can adequately risk measure.'"
What changed?
Chris says he could start communicating with the business in business terms, which built executive presence, buy-in, and trust.
"I was able to start communicating with the business like a business, and that was very powerful in establishing credible executive presence and solicitating buy-in and trust in what we were doing."
He describes the output as quickly showing where Group 1001 stood and where it had gaps, and as reinforcing its investment strategy.
"Once that was done, the output product flowed right out, and it was incredibly powerful because it quickly demonstrated where we stood, where we had gaps in certain areas, and it reinforced our investment strategy."
"It's provided me the ability to cross that bridge of what is the dollar value of your program and what you're doing."
"It was pretty quick and painless beyond us building trust with the product."
What is Chris's advice to other security leaders?
"I'd say to anyone else that's looking, if they're not looking at this or don't have an understanding of this, they really should be."
